I recently came across a book called “The 4 Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferris. The tagline on the book is “Escape 9-5, live anywhere and join the new rich.”The 4 Hour Work Week - Timothy Ferris

Since I am already a believer in working from home and entrepreneurship, I picked up this book, hoping for tips on how to reduce my working time while increasing my income.

This book is totally subversive!  If you are a boss and you see your employees reading this, watch out!

Here is what I loved about this book:

  • It offered ways to achieve a 4 hour work week for BOTH entrepreneurs and people who keep their jobs, unlike other techniques that require you to quit your job.
  • It is a whole new way of thinking about money and life – this book totally transformed my thinking to a new level.
  • It is easy to read with lots of examples and some great stories.

Here are key points from the book:

  • Waiting until you retire to have the life you want is insane – this book shows you how to take “mini-retirements” every year as a way of sampling your retirement.  My mother died at age 54, so I have always felt that waiting for retirement is crazy.
  • How to disconnect your income from a particular geographic location.  Something I have worked at over the last few years to allow me to travel.
  • How to eliminate 80% of your work while keeping your income and results.  A lesson I am getting better at myself.
  • How to travel the world without quitting your job.
  • “New Rich” concept – A millionaire working 80 hours per week isn’t really rich – just stressed.  Someone earning $5,000 to $10,000 per month working 4 hours a week is richer in time and is able to generate life enriching experiences.  I am really connecting to this concept.  I have never felt the need for insane amounts of money – just enough to live the way I want, travel and experience life without being tied to a job or business
  • Entrepreneurs must learn to become business “owners” instead of “managers.”

I highly recommend this book and think EVERYONE should have a copy.  I have made it required reading for my coaching students.

It is a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller, to give you an idea of how popular it is.
