Here is my review of some of the  best free and paid stock photo sites I have found. I have included a video of this so you could see the results. I also have it as a podcast at the bottom of this article. I’ll compare some of the free ones then some of the paid professional ones I use. I use stock photos a lot, I’m a blogger so of course I blog regularly. On my blog I can use fairly low resolution pictures; it can be 350 pixels wide. I also do a lot of speaking and presentations. There I need high resolution photos usually about a medium range probably about at least 1280 pixels wide. So the free websites that we will look at today are Morguefile and Stock.xchng. The paid ones are Bigstockphotos, depositphotos.com,  123RF, and the one I’ve use for years  which is iStockphoto. Let’s take them for a spin. I’m currently writing a course on time management.  So I’m going to start typing in searches for pictures relating to time management and see what kind of result we get. So let’s start off with Morguefile. Morguefile is free and does fairly has a large range but what I find is that most free stock photo websites work fairly well with photos of  birds or nature or building, but not so good on business type of metaphors.  As you can see in the video with time management, it really brings me up nothing at all. I can widen the search to do something like “time”, but the search won’t be as focused on what I am looking for Now the next one is Stock.xchng, another free one. Stock.xchng is also very good for a lot of buildings and people and stuff like that but again the free ones aren’t just good for business metaphor things. But I’ll try the time management and you see we do get a few. You know we do a wrist watch here that is not actually a bad one, this one certainly not a bad one for time management.. So there are a couple of decent ones here that are certainly usable. Stock.xchng and Morguefile I often look at first see if I can find something there but after that I usually end up going to the pro one pretty quick. So I go back to Morguefile and type in “time” and it gives me a few more, a little more on the broader its giving me some things that I could use but you pretty need a broad search to work and often you are not finding the things you want. But it did find a thousand and twenty nine (1029) related to time. So that gives me some benefits there. But Stock.xchng gave me 6 specifically related to time management. So now let’s try Bigstockphotos and here you will be able to see what a difference a professional website does. You can see it got lots of time management ones here with people, business, metaphors where they are putting thing on clock you know words and things like that. You can see at a glance that this is giving you lots to choose 6,396 results for time management for the actual phrase we search for. Right on this page I can see several that I would use. Interestingly I don’t often pick up the ones with the word clouds here even though  that they are very lovely because there are free tools out there like Wordle and some other ones that you can use to create them yourself by putting in words. So I find that rather paying for those I usually generate those myself. So Bigstockphotos certainly has a great selection. Let’s take a look at Deposit photos. Wewe do the search here and you see the 2327 results also very good, a lot of professional ones, similar ones are showing you know whether words showing face clock and you can go look at the additional pages, so again a fairly good one. Lest take a look at 123rf.com and you see once gain you get a 3,360 matches a very good result Sometimes your selection can be too big. Are you going to at all 3000? 123rf.com  gives you a lot of metaphors and different graphics that you can use, so overall again an excellent site.
